To prevent Windows from running timed cleanup and maintenance tasks while you do something timecritical (EG Gaming), you can run this command from Run  

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

These tasks can be short and not noticeable or long, depending on the systemstate and what maintenance jobs got registered by different software.
